Rotary Tree & Fruit Nursery Establishment and Tree Plantation Program

Rotary Club of Baneshwor, in partnership with Indrayeni Bhutkhel Community Forest, successfully carried out a Rotary Tree & Fruit Nursery Establishment and Tree Plantation Program in Tokha as part of our environmental sustainability initiative.

The club arranged and planted over 400 saplings of various species, including Dhupi, Tejpatta, Orange, Munthala, Lemon, Rosemary, Basil, and several other herbs and flowering plants. Additionally, 50 cypress wood plants were planted in a designated section of the community forest, based on the request of the forest authorities.

Following the plantation activity, the team visited the nursery section, where 400 plants were officially donated to be managed by Mr. Surya Man Dangol and Mr. Hari Narayan, representatives of the community forest. The nursery will care for these saplings until they reach a stable height and maturity, ensuring they are ready to withstand outdoor planting conditions.

This approach was adopted after learning from past experiences, where 50–60% of trees planted during the rainy season failed to survive due to over-saturation and instability. By grooming the plants in a controlled nursery environment first, the project ensures higher survival rates, long-term environmental impact, and resource optimization.

A highlight of the nursery is its on-site fertilizer production unit, where remains of fallen leaves and grasses are turned into organic compost. This eco-friendly fertilizer is sold at Rs. 25 per kg, generating revenue that supports the maintenance of both the forest and the nursery. Our donation not only contributes to greenery but also strengthens this circular and self-sustaining ecosystem.

The event saw active participation from 9 Rotarians, 4 volunteers from the community forest, and 2 Rotary volunteers, reflecting the collaborative spirit and shared commitment to a greener, more resilient future.

This project stands as a model for sustainable afforestation, balancing immediate environmental action with long-term care and impact.
